Comprehensive Nutrient Gap Assessment (CONGA): Zimbawe, Kenya, Rwanda

safiria

Wed, 04/21/2021 - 17:31

These briefs are part of a series on complementary feeding gaps by GAIN and UNICEF conducted in selected countries in Eastern and Southern Africa and South Asia as part of the UNICEF-BMGF Regional Initiatives for Sustained Improvements in Nutrition and Growth (RISING).

Inadequate quantity and quality of foods between 6 and 23 months of age - known as the complementary feeding period, when breast milk alone is no longer sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of infants and young children - are key causes of all forms of malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, and have immediate and long-term consequences. Improving young children’s diets can help prevent all forms of malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, and is an important component of efforts to achieve the global nutrition targets of the World Health Assembly and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Insight into specific problematic nutrients, along with the foods and feeding practices that can address those problems, is essential to inform policies and programmes designed to improve child health and nutrition. Evidence indicative of the burden of nutrient deficiencies or nutrient intakes is frequently available yet often underused or misinterpreted in decision-making and programme design, in part because relevant evidence often comes from disparate data sources of varying quality, representativeness, and recency. In many countries, available evidence has not been synthesized to produce a clear and comprehensive picture of the magnitude and significance of micronutrient gaps. As a result, policies and programmes designed to improve young children’s diets often omit specific reference to micronutrient gaps.

A method called Comprehensive Nutrient Gap Assessment (CONGA) was developed to fill this information gap. This approach provides guidance on how to use various types of evidence to assess the public health significance of nutrient gaps in a given population and the best food sources of those nutrients.

The 2016 Kazakhstan Fortification Assessment Coverage Toolkit (FACT) survey is a cross-sectional survey that is nationally representative and representative of urban and rural areas. The purpose of the survey was to update coverage figures of foods fortified according to the national standard and to estimate the potential contribution of fortified foods to the micronutrient intakes among children (less than 5 years of age) and women (15-49 years of age). The results provide evidence of programme performance, identify programme barriers, and estimate potential for impact.

Process evaluation of the programme delivery and household utilisation of a micronutrient powder programme in Mozambique

A focused ethnographic study (FES) was conducted as part of the programme evaluation for a project aimed at improving the nutrient adequacy of infant and young child diets in three districts of Sofala Province, Mozambique, through the delivery of micronutrient powder (MNP), called “VitaMais”, to children 6–23 months old and behaviour change interventions.

The objective of the caregiver interviews was to learn from their perspective about factors that facilitated or limited programme delivery and adherence to VitaMais recommendations. The results provide insights into the programme delivery and household utilisation of MNPs from the perspective of caregivers who participated in the programme.

The 2017 Nigeria Fortification Assessment Coverage Toolkit (FACT) survey is a cross-sectional survey, comprised of a state-level representative household and market assessments in the two states of Ebonyi and Sokoto. The aim of the survey was to provide data on household coverage and consumption of fortifiable and fortified foods among children (less than five years of age) and women (15-49 years of age) and on availability and quality of fortified foods from markets. The results provide evidence of programme performance, identify programme barriers, and estimate potential for impact.

A cross-sectional market survey was conducted by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) with support from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry in Bangladesh.

The aim of the survey was to:

Assess the presence of edible oil brands, including imported and locally produced brands and unbranded oils in selected markets across the eight divisions of the country.

Compare the vitamin A content of the edible oil brands with the national edible oil fortification standards.

The results of this survey inform programmatic decisions and support effective implementation of the edible oil food fortification programmes in Bangladesh.

The 2017 Pakistan Fortification Assessment Coverage Toolkit (FACT) survey is a cross-sectional survey, comprised of a provincially-representative household assessment in three provinces (Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh) and a market assessment in four provinces (Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The aim of the survey was to provide data on household coverage and consumption of fortifiable and fortified foods among children (less than five years of age) and women (18-49 years of age) and on availability and quality of fortified foods from markets. The results provide evidence of programme performance, identify programme barriers, and estimate the potential for impact.

A market assessment was conducted in Burkina Faso in 2017 using Fortification Assessment Coverage Toolkit (FACT) methodology. It was carried out across eight market hubs strategically selected in different regions of the country. The assessment sought to:

Document the presence of fortified oil, salt, and wheat flour.

Measure the micronutrient content in the fortified food vehicles and assess their compliance with national fortification standards.

The 2017 Afghanistan Fortification Assessment Coverage Toolkit (FACT) survey is a cross-sectional survey comprised of a household and market assessment. The household assessment is representative at the national level and stratum level (i.e. rural, urban (Kabul) and urban (other)). The aim of the survey was to provide data on household coverage and consumption of fortifiable and fortified foods among children (less than 5 years of age) and women (15-49 years of age), and on availability and quality of fortified foods from markets. The results provide evidence of programme performance, identify programme barriers, and estimate potential for impact.

Development of simplified dietary assessment tools to inform the design of nutrition interventions

Development of simplified dietary assessment tools to inform the design of nutrition interventions

cattanef

Tue, 07/09/2019 - 12:58

The goal of this study was to develop and test two methods of quantitative dietary assessment that are less technically challenging and less expensive to implement than the standard 24HR dietary recall procedure, but still capable of identifying nutrient gaps with acceptable precision. The main research activities were to:

Design methods to collect necessary input data (food listing, usual portion sizes, usual recipes) needed to implement the survey tools and convert food intakes into nutrients.

Implement field surveys to compare the two test methods with a standard reference method (full 24HR recall approach).

Compare the results of the test survey methods to those of the standard 24HR recall reference method, focusing on four key outcomes.

The findings in this study indicate that a well-designed SQ-FFQ survey may be a viable option for quantitative dietary intake assessment where the objectives are suited to support the design of food-based nutrition interventions.

Process evaluation of the programme delivery and household utilisation of an integrated home fortification project in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia

Thu, 07/25/2019 - 11:11

A focused ethnographic study (FES) was conducted as part of the programme evaluation for a project aimed at improving complementary feeding practices through the delivery of a micronutrient powder (MNP) and behaviour change communication messages to approximately 71,000 children 6–23 months in six woredas in Ethiopia’s Amhara region through the public health system.

The objective of the study was to learn from the perspective of caregivers about factors that facilitated or limited programme delivery and adherence to DESTA recommendations. The results provide insights into the programme delivery and household utilisation of MNPs from the perspective of caregivers who participated in the programme.
